Seeni sambol (Sri Lanka)

One more dish from the famous breakfast I did for the Sri Lankan guys at work.  This was to die for and I’ll definitely make it again!

Very simple ingredients list.  LOADS of red onions – oh yum!! I actually ended up adding more curry leaves than shown here. As you can see, I like to prepare everything before it goes into production, keeps the process smooth!

Adding the onions.  It seems like a lot – but it does reduce quite dramatically!

About halfway through cooking time.  Looking amazing!

A little bit of salt to taste.. and it’s ready!

Oh wow!! I have no words.  Truly a beautiful beautiful dish, goes so well with Coconut Roti!! YUM!!

This was such a quick dish to make – and ever so good! It disappeared fast! Went with all the other dishes I had made – packaged up and ready to go in to work:

The guys also bring in a lot of bread which goes well too 🙂 This week I am only doing one dish.. ok maybe I’ll do the Seeni Sambol again because they requested it! Will be doing a canned fish curry – stay tuned!


  • Oil/Butter (I used coconut oil)
  • 4 – 5 Red Onions
  • Garlic 3 – 4 cloves
  • 3 Green Chillies
  • Curry Leaves
  • Cinnamon Stick (I used Ceylon Cinnamon)
  • Chilli flakes
  • Chilli Powder
  • Turmeric
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Curry Powder (I used 2 types – roasted and normal curry powder)
  • Sugar
  • Optional: Maldive fish flakes (if not vegan)
